Café
Du Monde opened in 1862 in New Orleans and is still
open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, except for
Christmas Day (and the occasional hurricane). The
people-watching is non-stop at Café Du Monde, which
is located in the main artery of the French Quarter.
Fortune tellers, artists, mimes, musicians, singers,
tap dancers, tourists and celebrities cavort in a
colorful pageant day and night, so sit back and enjoy
your café au lait and enjoy the show!
Although
the coffee and beignets are the stars of Café Du Monde,
fresh squeezed orange juice plays a strong supporting
role. Coffee came to North America by way of New Orleans
in the mid 1700's. It was successfully cultivated
in Martinique in the 1720's and the French brought
it with them as they began to settle in the southern
regions of the continent. During the Civil War, chicory
(from the root of the endive plant) was added to give
the coffee more body and a rich chocolate flavor.
Chicory coffee is the most popular menu item at Café
Du Monde, which can be served black, or au lait with
plain or chocolate milk. Of course, the beignets are
heavenly and not to be missed! The square, French-style
doughnuts are lavishly covered with powdered sugar
and served in orders of three.
While
shooting The Wheel of Fortune in New Orleans, Vanna
White insisted on visiting the landmark and having
a beignet and café au lait. Dressed from head to toe
in a chic black sweater, black jeans and boots, the
television star bit in to her Beignet and was suddenly
covered with powdered sugar. She was a good sport
and laughed as she said she "would be back for more!"
Jay Leno and former President Bill Clinton have also
paid visits to the famous coffee spot!
When
you visit New Orleans, this conspicuous historic structure,
coffee and beignets are a must see…and taste!
